What is the difference between gel and acrylic?
The age old question still stands. Which is better? Gel or acrylic? Well that all depends on your nail plate, and what will work better with your lifestyle.
“Gel is a softer product, so it doesn’t withstand the wear and tear that acrylic will, but some don’t need the extra strength of acrylic.” – Nails Magazine
It is up to the nail tech as well, because a lot of them don’t have the knowledge base to do gel, or the resources. There are quite a few benefits Gel offers that you can’t get from Acrylic.
1) Odorless
2) Natural Feeling
3) Thin
4) More flexible than acrylic
5) Light Weight
6) Natural looking
7) No lifting! (Which you shouldn’t have with acrylic if the nail tech does it properly.)
Gel nails do need to be filed off, so if you are looking at getting a full set for a one time event, and not wanting to leave them on, gel is probably not the easiest route.
“Immediate gratification and a healthy nail philosophy! Instant length and beauty can be achieved at the first visit by utilizing tips or forms in the gel nail full-set. The ultimate long-term goal with gels is for the client to end up growing out and wearing her (or his!) own long, strong, beautiful, HEALTHY nails under the gel; so that she is no longer to be considered wearing artificial nails, but with the gel becoming essentially just a very strong, bonded base coat to protect her own nails from cracking, splitting, peeling, chipping, etc. She is now wearing a nail enhancement, not “fake” nails, and the enhancement need never be removed, only maintained on a regular schedule! Just as hair color is an enhancement of her natural hair, not “fake” hair, and can be maintained indefinitely. Gel nail enhancements ARE the client’s own natural nail…. ONLY BETTER!” -NailSplash.com

What is the difference between hard gel and soft gel?
Both are cured in a light, weather it be LED or UV, and have a sticky layer that needs to be removed (on most gels.) Depending on the reason you’re getting the service done, and what you’re looking for your enhancement to do, talk with your tech, and they will recommend what would work better for you personally.
Hard Gel:
Soft Gel:
Hard Gel:
- Must be filed off by a professional to prevent damage to the natural nail
- Builds any type of extension from your natural nail
Soft Gel:
- Can be soaked off in acetone. I prefer filing it off to prevent exposure to the harsh acetone.
- Is flexible
- Adds no length
What is the difference between a fill and a backfill?
A fill is filling in the new growth area between the cuticle and the enhancement. (Usually done within 2 or 3 weeks) This service also includes repairing of any cracks, breakage or lifting of the nail product.
A backfill is adding to your regular fill. Instead of just filling in the new growth area, the smile line is moved back or the color is changed altogether.
